Group History

The Wirral Stammering Support Group has been going for about 7/8 years. We started up with 5/6 members, of whom all had been to the Willy Russell Speech Group, Abercrombie Centre, Liverpool where we all did an Intensive Course which lasted 3 and a half days and was run and organized by the Speech Therapist Mary Collings.

We started meeting at one or two members' houses on the Wirral  latterly meeting in West Kirby. The group wasn’t getting new members and it was decided that we moved to a new venue and location; and at the same time Stuart Ford, the then Group Leader, decided to stand down. Simon gladly took over as Group Leader, and in November 2007 moved to the new venue, The Stork Pub, Price Street, Birkenhead. We had a Launch night in January 2008. Following advertising on the local radio and the local newspapers we had some new members at the launch night and the following monthly meetings. However, despite fluctuating numbers coming to the group meetings the Group is now growing again with new members following some more advertising in the local newpapers and on the local radio.

The Wirral Speech Group is now on the up and up!
